Introduction:
I recently came across a cool service called Getflix which essentially tricks streaming sites into thinking your IP address is in the United States. They're also running a giveaway right now to win a brand new iPhone XS Max!
Getflix is better than just using a VPN because it doesn’t route all of your internet traffic, only the DNS request to visit the streaming site. The technology is referred to as a “Smart DNS service” on their website and is definitely preferable to using a VPN due to the low overhead bandwidth.
You can try Getflix for FREE for 2 weeks as well! Keep reading for more information on what exactly Getflix is and how it works.
What is Getflix?
Getflix is a service that allows you to use various streaming services from anywhere in the world. They use their Smart DNS and VPN technology to get past geo-blocking and unlock your access to the world of digital media.
You can use the Getflix service to stream media on many devices including PCs, game consoles, smartphones, tablets, and more. See below for a full list of streaming services that are compatible.
Where can I use Getflix?
You can use Getflix at any WiFi hotspot, in hotel rooms, or anywhere “3rd-party DNS servers are blocked or hijacked” – this is usually blocked for network security reasons, but Getflix is unaffected by this and works perfectly.

If you’d like any device on your network to use Getflix, go with the first option. You can configure the DNS settings for your entire network by following these steps (the next section will contain instructions for device-specific setup):
- Log into your router/modem as an administrator. You can do this by typing the router’s IP address in your browser (usually 192.168.1.1). The username is usually “admin” and the password is sometimes just “password” but you can make sure on the side of your modem/router. There should be a sticker there with the correct info.
- There should be a “Setup” section where you can click “Basic Settings”
- Go to the section where you can tell it to use specific DNS servers.
- Type in the DNS servers that are closest to you, geographically.
- Click “Save” to save your changes.
- Restart the router (there is usually a button on the web interface, but you may have to manually unplug the modem/router)
- Once your router is done rebooting, log into your Getflix account to register your new IP address.
Device-Specific Setup

- You must also configure your DNS settings on your modem/router for a Roku device to work properly. Go to https://check.getflix.com/au to run their free DNS test to see if it has been configured correctly.
- Ensure your PC is configured correctly by going to Command Prompt or Terminal and type “ping owner.roku.com” and hit Enter. If you receive a response then you’re all set, if not then you will need to visit the Getflix page for information on “flushing your DNS cache”.
- If you already have an existing Roku account that wasn’t a US one, you need to unlink and deactivate your account by going to https://owner.roku.com
- Factory Reset your Roku device under Settings or use a paper clip to press and hold the small Reset button on the back of the Roku for 20 seconds. You will then see the Roku welcome screen loading on your TV.
- Create a new Roku account in the US by going to the same website, https://owner.roku.com. Make sure to use a valid ZIP code and US address.
- Set up your Roku (making sure you’re connected to the configured network) and when asked, select “United States” as your region.
- You should now be able to add Roku channels from the US, but not all channels are supported by Getflix.

- Under “Setup” and “System”, select “Set Time & Country” and then click “Reset Location” and your new US location should show up.
Getflix VPN:
Even though the Getflix Smart DNS is all you need to utilize US streaming services, you may want to take advantage of their VPN (Virtual Private Network) access which is optional and free for all Getflix subscribers.
A VPN gives you the following:
- Safe browsing because all of your internet traffic is encrypted through their servers.
- Websites can’t track you with cookies which are “digital footprints” that you normally leave as you browse the web.
- Your IP address, which is unique to your location, is hidden from websites.
- Your data is secure when using public hotspots or Wi-Fi networks.
- Getflix doesn’t keep any logs about your internet browsing activity and there are no bandwidth or speed limitations
The Getflix VPN service provides 4 layers of security protocols including:
- PPTP Protocol – 128-bit encryption, supported by almost every operating system.
- L2TP Protocol – 256-bit encryption, also supported by most operating systems and provides fast speeds.
- SSTP Protocol – 2048-bit encryption, only works on Windows, slower than PPTP and L2TP but more secure.
- OpenVPN UDP Protocol – 2048-bit encryption, very secure and supported universally, but complicated to set up.
Visit the Getflix site for detailed setup instructions.
